I’m currently doing a postgraduate course online while working full-time, and I want to share what it’s really like. This isn’t my first rodeo. Years ago, I completed my MBA on campus while working full-time—an experience that taught me a lot about what not to do if you want to stay sane.

My MBA Days: Tired, Hungry, and Always Rushing

Back then, everything was in person. I’d leave work late, rush to campus already exhausted, and sit in class hungry, waiting for the short break to grab something quick (usually nothing great). My job involved travel and running marketing events, so I sometimes had to skip classes entirely. Group projects were tougher—we squeezed meetings into lunch breaks or late nights, and teammates weren’t thrilled when work pulled me away. I was also caring for a young family. By the end, I felt like I was constantly sprinting between work, class, group work, travel, and home. It was exhausting.

Why Online Postgrad Study Is a Game-Changer

This time, I chose to study online—and it’s made a huge difference. No rushing through traffic. No missed classes because I’m away for work. I can watch recorded sessions when it suits me, pause to take notes, and catch up if I fall behind. The flexibility is the best part:

  • I study harder during quiet weeks.
  • I slow down when work gets busy or I’m travelling.
  • I never feel guilty about missing a class, because everything is recorded.

Honestly, it feels far more manageable—and I’m learning more, because I can rewatch tricky sections whenever I need to.

My Tips for Fellow Busy Professionals

  • Block out time: Treat study sessions like meetings in your calendar.
  • Use recordings: Pause, rewind, or speed up—make them work for you.
  • Stay connected: Join online discussions or study groups to keep momentum.
  • Be realistic: Some weeks will be intense. Give yourself grace and adjust.

The Bottom Line

Studying while working full-time is still a challenge—but with online study, it doesn’t feel overwhelming like face-to-face classes used to. I can balance my career, learning, and life far better this time around. If you’re considering a Master’s or postgraduate course but worry about time, online study truly makes it possible.

For Australians exploring tech and business pathways, IT Masters—delivered in partnership with Charles Sturt University (CSU)—offers online programs built for busy professionals. The structure, recorded content, and industry focus make it easier to fit study around a full-time role while earning a respected CSU credential.
