Who will present the webinars?
Dr Vasu (Vasundhara) Rani Sood is a committed academic and researcher with extensive expertise in ICT and Health Informatics. She holds a PhD from the University of Southern Queensland, where her research focused on the adoption of mobile devices in healthcare settings. Proficient in both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies—including SPSS and NVivo—Dr Sood has contributed to the advancement of health systems through the integration of digital technologies.
She has designed, taught, and coordinated IT and health-related subjects and projects at several leading Australian institutions, including the University of Tasmania, Federation University, and ECA. In addition to her academic work, Dr Sood has held leadership roles with the Health Informatics Society of Australia (HISA) and the Australasian College of Health Informatics (ACHI), where she has supported innovation and collaboration within the health informatics community.
Her current research interests include artificial intelligence in healthcare, health informatics, and cyber security.
What is the aim of this short course?
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- CLO 1: Explain foundational concepts, historical developments, and key specialties within the discipline of health informatics, and critically evaluate major challenges such as data quality, privacy, security, and interoperability in healthcare information management. (Module 1)
- CLO 2: Describe the structures, components, and functionalities of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) and supportive administrative systems, and evaluate the practical role of Clinical Decision Support (CDS) tools in enhancing clinical effectiveness, decision-making, and patient care outcomes. (Module 2)
- CLO 3: Assess the impact of digital health technologies, including Personal Health Records (PHRs), telehealth, mobile health (mHealth), and ePatient engagement tools, on patient empowerment, healthcare accessibility, and the delivery of patient-centred care. (Module 3)
- CLO 4: Critically analyse ethical, legal, and security responsibilities associated with managing sensitive healthcare information, and discuss emerging trends and innovations such as artificial intelligence, interoperability, data analytics, and their implications for the future of healthcare delivery and informatics. (Module 4)
- CLO 5: Integrate theoretical knowledge with practical insights to recommend effective strategies for implementing, managing, and optimising health information technologies within diverse healthcare settings, addressing contemporary issues and anticipating future healthcare informatics challenges. (Across all Modules)
What is included?
In addition to the weekly hour-long interactive webinars, you will be provided with suggested reading materials, an active discussion forum and a weekly activity to complete.
Is there a final exam?
Yes — the short course exam will be a timed, open-book exam that you will sit at your computer.
Do I get a completion certificate if I complete the course?
Yes — provided you receive a pass mark (50% or over) for course assessment, which comprises the exam and any available participation marks.
Are there any prerequisites for the course?
No, you can sit this short course all by itself.
Will the course qualify me for university credit?
No — This course is not eligible for IT Masters and Charles Sturt University course credit. Successful completion of three or more of our credit-eligible short courses will qualify you for one credit for an industry elective subject in our postgraduate courses.
