Course Schedule

 

This week we introduce the amazing field of digital forensics! We examine the importance of forensics in the modern digital world using various interesting readings and videos.

This week we look at the process of collecting digital evidence for forensic purposes from a variety of digital media. We will discuss static and live acquisition techniques and when each one is appropriate to use in the field.

This week we look briefly at how digital forensics can be used to examine a variety of sources. Included are topics on the Windows OS, virtual machines, networks, and social media. You will learn about some of the basic techniques and theories around each of these topics.

This week we begin to explore the numerous software and hardware tools used by digital forensic investigators. We examine how tools are selected based on the context of an investigation and the specific details of the evidence available.

Course Information

 

Who will present the webinars?

Matt Constable and will be your facilitator for this Digital Forensics short course.

Appropriately, Matt has a Bachelor of Computing from La Trobe University and a Master of Computer Security from Edith Cowan University. Less appropriately, he also has a Graduate Diploma in Psychology, a Masters degree in Exercise Physiology and am currently pursuing a PhD in Sports Science – bet you didn’t see that coming!

He have worked in the IT industry for far longer than he cares to say and has extensive experience in network engineering and cyber security. He also has experience in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), contact centre and wireless technologies. He has been on both sides of the integrator/customer table at various times throughout my career, and have a strong background in enterprise and integrator spaces. At various times, he has held professional level certifications with numerous vendors including Cisco, Juniper, Checkpoint, ISC2, Novell, Microsoft, SANS, F5 & Radware. He has been an Adjunct Lecturer at Charles Sturt University since 2007, teaching subjects in the IT Masters programs.

 

What is the aim of this short course?

The aim of the short course is to give you a ‘taster’ of what it is like to undertake postgraduate study via online learning with Charles Sturt University. The short course is based on the subject ITC597, which is one of the subjects in the Graduate Certificate and Master of Cyber Security, as well as Graduate Certificate in Computing (Career Transition).

 

What is included?

In addition to the weekly hour-long interactive webinars, you will be provided with suggested reading materials, an active discussion forum and a weekly activity to complete.

 

Is there a final exam?

Yes — the short course exam will be a timed, open-book exam that you will sit at your computer.

 

Do I get a completion certificate if I complete the course?

Yes — provided you receive a pass mark (50% or over) for the exam.

 

Will the course qualify me for university credit?

Yes — successful completion of three or more of our short courses will qualify you for one credit for an industry elective subject in our postgraduate courses. Click here for further details.
