The modern professional environment requires digital communication now more than ever – remote and distanced working is here to stay. The work must go on, but there are challenges when communicating, working and achieving outcomes over purely digital mediums. This course aimed directly at those issues.

Derived from the full Masters subject MGI521 Professional Communications, this 4 week short course covers those elements which are most useful in the highly digital paradigm. We will cover some theory and fundamentals, but everything will be explored within the context of how it functions online.

Here we explain the nuances and differences between the familiar digital mediums. We explore how each one functions differently and examine the most important key components of its use.

  • Email: a new look at one of our most familiar tools
  • Instant Messaging: a discerning look at the best uses and application of this tool
  • Presentations: the concepts of the classical slide deck are explored here

Here we look at applying both the tools and theories to achieve results in a digital workplace. We explore how the theories are leveraged in digital meetings, collaboration and working together.

  • Communications Culture: understanding the effects of collective habits on our comms
  • Live Webinars/Meetings: how to get the most out of digital presentations and meetings
  • Collaboration tools: using technology for teamwork, efficiency and collaboration
  • Facilitation: how to lead collective efforts for success and positive change

Course Information

 

Who will present the webinars?

These webinars are presented by our senior industry based management lecturer and subject designer, Brenton Burchmore.

During his 20+ years in corporate management, Brenton has overhauled and implemented systems, processes, procedures and software utilising an array of project management techniques and methods. He now brings his practical experience to another free online short course.

 

What is the aim of this short course?

In addition to providing tools you can implement into your work life immediately, this short course will give you a ‘taster’ of what it is like to do online postgraduate study with Charles Sturt University.

This short course covers sections of the subject MGI521: Professional Communications.

In addition to the weekly hour-long interactive webinars, you will be provided with audio lectures, suggested reading materials and a weekly activity to complete.

 

Is there a final exam?

Yes — the short course exam will be a timed, open-book exam that you will sit at your computer.

 

Do I get a completion certificate if I complete the course?

Yes — provided you receive a pass mark (50% or over) for course assessment, which comprises the exam and any available participation marks.

 

Will the course qualify me for university credit?
